Protected Characteristics

Protected Characteristics

It is important that all children gain an understanding of the world they are growing up in, and learn how to live alongside, and show respect for, a diverse range of people. We want our children to understand that everyone is different and we need to celebrate our differences.

The Equality Act 2010, identifies the nine ‘protected characteristics’ as:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Gender
  • Sexual orientation
  • Marriage and civil partnership

At Swaffield, our children learn about the protected characteristics, in order to:

  • Eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation
  • Advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it
  • Foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it

The curriculum for teaching about the protected characteristics is planned and delivered in an age appropriate way using the Jigsaw scheme of work for PSHE (details below).
In addition to this, children also learn about them through:

  • Our school’s Vision and Values
  • Conscious role modelling by all adults in the school community
  • Assemblies
  • Teaching of the British Values
  • Discussions in lessons across the curriculum
  • Promoting articulation by building appropriate language and a coherent vocabulary
  • PSHE lessons using the Jigsaw scheme of work, including RSE lessons
  • RE lessons
  • Enrichment activities including trips
  • Guest speakers
  • Extra-curricular activities including after-school clubs
