Swaffield School

Big Read Fundraiser

A highlight of the spring term was the success of our Big Read fundraiser. A huge well done to all the children who took part and a big thank you to everyone who sponsored them—we raised over £600!

The School Council has used some of the money to buy a copy of each of the winning books from the class book competition, with the rest being split between their two chosen charities: Lia’s Wings and Centrepoint.

This kind of initiative perfectly reflects Swaffield’s values, which are rooted in kindness, empathy, and community spirit. It’s been wonderful to see these values
in action and to see the children so engaged.  Ms Hamilton, Head Teacher

The Big Read was an idea from School Council who asked children from Nursery up to Year 6 to read as many books or chapters as they could between Valentine's Day on 14th February and World Book Day on 6th March and encourage their families to sponsor them.

All children were given “Big Read” bookmarks to write down the books/chapters they read.

In addition, School Council invited parents to volunteer to read in their child's class and share a favourite story.

There was also a class book competition for which each class held a knockout-style book competition.  Children were asked to bring their favourite book into school.  Two children at a time then told the rest of the class why they like their chosen book so much and the rest of the class voted for which one of the two goes through to the next round.   This continued each day until there was a final with the two most popular books.  Part of the money raised by the sponsored Big Read was used to buy a copy of each class's winning book for the class.
