The Pod

The Pod is our Specialist Resource Base for children with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) / Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs / anxiety
or any combination.

It was opened for Key Stage 1 in September 2022. Since September 2023, it has grown to have two classrooms. We have one classroom that provides an EYFS / Key Stage 1 curriculum and a second classroom which provides a Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 curriculum.

Admissions

All admissions are managed by the Local Authority (Wandsworth Council) and not by the school. Places are only available for children with an EHCP. We are happy to arrange a tour for parents whose child fulfils this criteria.

Provision

At Swaffield Primary School, we take pride in our inclusive approach and believe that every child deserves access to a broad and balanced curriculum. We offer engaging, high-quality learning experiences in a safe and supportive environment where children feel happy, valued, and confident to succeed.

The Pod follows similar curriculum topics to the mainstream classes, carefully adapted to suit the academic, social, and learning needs of each individual child.
We also place a strong focus on Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education. Our aim is to help every pupil reach their full potential while developing
a love of learning

Our staff are skilled practitioners with specialist knowledge, trained to meet the individual needs of our children and deliver targeted therapeutic interventions.
They work closely with both a Speech and Language Therapist and an Occupational Therapist, while also collaborating with parents and carers to foster
a holistic, team-based approach to each child’s development.

Our learning environment is thoughtfully designed to be a calm, nurturing, and positive space, with a high adult-to-child ratio to ensure individual support and attention. Children benefit from a variety of learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

The learning areas are low-arousal and structured with clear visual supports to minimise distractions and help children stay focused, enhancing their ability to engage with learning. Pupils also have access to our dedicated Sensory and Therapy rooms, which are equipped with a wide range of therapeutic tools and resources to provide rich, multisensory experiences tailored to their needs
Children can take part in lessons and play times in The Pod and with their mainstream class, each child will have their own timetable that best meets their learning needs.

Staff

The Pod has a high staff to pupil ratio, and our team are: 

  • Mr Parkinson – Teacher Pod 1, Co-Head of Base
  • Ms Saldanha – Teacher Pod 2, Co-Head of Base
  • Learning Support Assistants - Miss McIlroy, Miss Clarke,
    Miss Martin, Miss Tariq and Miss Alderman

We also have part-time external support from speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, play therapy and educational psychology services.
